Core vs. Fringe Vocabulary on an AAC Board
A good AAC communication board balances two kinds of words.
Core vocabulary
Core words are the small set of words people use constantly, in every setting: I, you, want, like, more, stop, go, help, yes, no, finished. Because they work everywhere, a core board is usually the first board a learner uses, whether they are autistic, have Down syndrome, apraxia of speech, cerebral palsy or another communication need.
Fringe vocabulary
Fringe words belong to one situation: a favorite snack, a toy, a place, a person, a feeling. Fringe boards sit alongside the core board and fill in the specific things a learner wants to talk about right now.
Most families and classrooms end up using both: one core board that goes everywhere, plus a handful of fringe boards for mealtimes, play, school and daily care.
Try Speak Spark AAC Boards Free in Your Browser
Speak Spark is a full AAC app that runs in the web browser, so there is nothing to install and no app store account needed. You can try 3 of its 28 boards for free, with no signup, before you pay for anything.
The free boards include a core words board and boards for snacks and greetings. Tap the words to build a sentence and hear it spoken in your device's own American voice, for example I want more, or I don't like that.
It works on an iPad, an Android tablet, a phone or a Chromebook, which matters for families whose child does not have an iPad. Trying the free boards is the quickest way to see whether the layout and voice suit your learner before you commit.
We do not offer a separate pack of PDF downloads. The printable boards described on this page come from inside the Speak Spark app.
Printing AAC Boards for Home and School
With the full Speak Spark app you can print any board, laminate it and use it anywhere. That gives you a paper copy of exactly the board your learner already uses on screen, with the same words in the same places, which keeps things consistent.
Tips for paper boards that last:
Print on cardstock if you have it, so the board stays stiff.
Laminate it so it survives spills, sticky fingers and the bottom of a school bag.
Keep copies where they are needed: on the refrigerator, at the table, on a desk, on a clipboard.
Model it: point to the words yourself as you speak, so your learner sees how the board is used.
Because every board has an add-your-own-photo cell, a printed snack or people board can show their actual snack, their actual show and their actual family.
Why a Paper AAC Board Still Matters
Even with an app, a printed board earns its place. Tablets run out of battery, get left in the car, and are not welcome at the pool, the playground or the bath. A laminated board is light, cheap to replace and works anywhere.
Paper boards also help other people join in. A grandparent, babysitter, coach or substitute teacher can pick up a printed board and point to words straight away, without needing to know how an app works.
If your child already has a funded device with a system their speech-language pathologist programmed, keep using it: consistency matters more than switching tools. Speak Spark suits families on waitlists, waiting on evaluations or funding, wanting an always-available backup, or just getting started with AAC.

Frequently Asked Questions About Printable AAC Boards
Are the printable boards free?
You can try 3 of Speak Spark's 28 boards free in your browser, with no signup. Printing boards is part of the full app, which is $99 one time (or $39 a year, or $5.99 a month). We do not offer a separate pack of free PDF downloads.
What devices does Speak Spark work on?
Any device with a web browser: iPad, Android tablet, phone or Chromebook. No app store account is needed.
Can I use printed boards alongside the app?
Yes. Many families keep a laminated copy of the same board for places where a tablet is not practical, so the words stay in the same places on paper and on screen.
How should I prepare printed AAC boards for daily use?
Print boards from the Speak Spark app onto cardstock if you can, then laminate them straight away. That gives a wipeable surface that stands up to spills and constant pointing, and you can keep copies at the table, on a desk and in a bag.
Can I personalize the AAC boards?
Yes. Every Speak Spark board has an add-your-own-photo cell, so you can add your learner's real snack, show or people. The AI board builder can also make a ready-made board for a specific situation, and any board can be printed.
Are these AAC boards suitable for children with sensory processing needs?
Clear, consistent boards help many learners, because the same words always sit in the same place, which makes communication more predictable. Graded core levels let you start with a single large button and build up to the full core board as your learner is ready.
